One of the most extensive uses of water in industry is in cooling systems. Industrial processes and air conditioning require cooling water in chillers and/or heat exchangers to reduce the temperature of industrial water before it is recycled back into the process. The treatment of cooling water is nessary to prevent theformation of microbiological slime, or biofilm, due to bacterial contamination. The warm water and low velocity in industrial pipes and equipment creates a favorable environment for this bacterial proliferation. Biofilm is extremely insulating and if not properly treated, it will negatively impact heat transfer in industrial water processes. Biofilm buildup will result in inefficient cooling and higher endergy use, improper malfunction and decrease in performance of chllers and heat exchangers, and uncontrolled growth of bacterial pathogens with potential life threatening health consequesces such as Legionella.. Cooling towers vary in size depending ont e process to be cooled by water. TowerGuard addreesses small to meduim size manufacturing plants with capacity ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 gallons. TowerGuard is EPA approved!
